Practical attitute towards operation of bioreactors (basic course)
Who is invited?
The course is dedicated to employees of R&D laboratories, students of biological and biotechnological faculties, employees of the brewing industry etc.
Programme
The training program includes:
- Construction and types of bioreactors
- Basic calculations in the field of bioreactor design
- Sterilization of the device and its preparation for work
- Control of thermal conditions
- Control of pH parameters and aeration
- Collection of samples during work cycles
- Assuring proper mixing of cultures,
- Methods for extinguishing foam in bioreactors,
- Operation of the bioreactor’s software on the example of BiostatAplus bioreactor
- Techniques for separation of the final product,
- Preparation of microbiological media for bioreactors
Day I
On the first day, the students will familiarize themselves with the above-listed topics (Theoretical introduction). Next, preparation of the BioststAplus bioreactor for operation, including its sterilization and the preparation of microbiological media are planned. Subsequently, the course participants will carry out the process of inoculating the medium with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and set the culture parameters in relation to the issues discussed in the theoretical introduction. The alternative culture will be carried out in a shaking incubator. During the culture process, the participants will control the individual culture parameters and collect samples for inoculation on microbiological media.
Day II
Continuation of conducting a Saccharomyces cerevisiae culture in a bioreactor and sampling. Preliminary analysis of the results from Day I. End of breeding and discussion of the most important problems in the cultivation and summary of the course. The results collected during Day II will be sent to the participants by e-mail.
General Information
The training will be conducted in small groups (up to 8 people) in the Research & Development Laboratory of IFB UG & MUG (20 Podwale Przedmiejskie street, 80-824 Gdańsk, Poland). Each participant will be involved in the experiments in order to obtain the necessary laboratory practice. The courses will be conducted by experienced academia teachers, specialists and practitions in the field. The participants will receive certificates confirming acquisition of the practical skills.
